FAQ
Getting started
Anyone who wants to preserve the stories of someone they love. Most people use it with a parent or grandparent who is unlikely to write the stories down themselves. You can also use it for an aunt, an uncle, a sibling, a friend, or even your own stories.
You have a conversation and record it. You can do it in person or on the phone. We turn the recording into a written story in their own words. You can read it, make changes, and share it with family.
We give you questions to start with. You can browse questions by topic, such as childhood, work, love, and family, and save the ones you like. Pick one and let the conversation go where it goes. After each story, we suggest follow-up questions you can add to the story later if you'd like.
There are three ways. We can set up a video call and record it for you, so there is nothing to save or upload. You can also call the way you always do, with the phone on speaker and a second device recording. Or you can use the call recording built into your phone. Whichever you choose, let the other person know you are recording.
No. You can talk on a call, sit together in person, or upload a recording you already have. You can also type a story instead of recording one. Your family member does not need an account or an app. If you set up a call, they get a link by email and open it in their browser.
It doesn’t have to be long. A rich story can come out in 5 to 10 minutes, while several related anecdotes can come out during a 30-minute call. Start with one question and let the conversation go where it goes. You can always record updates to the story or start a new story later.
You can talk in most major languages, including English, Spanish, Mandarin, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, and Vietnamese, and many more. The story is always written in English and keeps some words and names in the original language. Less common languages may not work as well. If you are not sure, try a short recording first.
Other apps ask your loved one a question every week. They need to find time to sit down and answer each question on their own. With Told Together, all they have to do is have a conversation with you. Instead of homework, it's an opportunity to connect.
Your stories
A written story in their words and voice, usually ready a few minutes after you finish. We email you when it is ready. The original recording and transcript are also saved with it. You can edit, print, and share the story.
Yes. You can edit any part of it. We also suggest follow-up questions for each story. Record or type the answers and we work them into the story for you.
Yes. Every story has a Print button that makes a clean copy to print or save as a PDF. If you shared the recording, the printed page includes a QR code that links to the audio.
Plans and privacy
$39.99 a year, or $4.99 a week with a 7-day free trial. You can cancel anytime in Settings → Plan.
Everything. You can record, upload, or type as many stories as you like, use our library of questions, set up recorded calls, get follow-up suggestions for each story, edit your stories, share them with family, and print them. If you cancel, your plan stays active until the end of the time you paid for. After that you can still read, edit, and share the stories you already have. You will need a plan to start new ones.
If something went wrong or you were charged by mistake, contact us and tell us what happened. We look at every request.
Told Together is available to people who live in the United States. The person you talk with can live anywhere, as long as you have their permission to record the conversation.
Only you, until you share a story. Shared stories can be seen by anyone who has the link. You can delete a story, a recording, or your whole account at any time.
